Bonnie Tyler is hoping for a Top 10 placing at this weekend's Eurovision Song Contest final in Sweden.
Bonnie Tyler Talks Eurovision "I'm Not A Gimmicky Act, I Know I've Got A Good Song"
Bonnie Tyler is hoping for a Top 10 placing at this weekend's Eurovision Song Contest final in Sweden. A TV audience of 120 million will watch the Welsh multi-platinum singer perform "Believe In Me" in front of thousands of Euro fans, inside the Malmö Arena.
Speaking to me in London, before she headed off for a week of press conferences, interviews and rehearsals, a refreshingly honest Bonnie confessed to me " I'm just going to do sing the song, no gimmicks. I know I'm going to be up against lots of gimmicks but I'm not a gimmicky type and the song hold its own. Desmond Child has written a wonderful song. I'm going to do my best and hope that we have a good result. If we finish in the Top 10, I'll be happy…if you're on Facebook talking to foreign friends get them to support Bonnie!"
I suddenly realise that this music icon is the real deal and one of the nicest, most genuine stars in the business.
And she's a star that has sold over 80 million records worldwide and only this week released her brilliant new studio album "Rocks and Honey." So, with all that experience I wondered if she's worried about the younger competition this year? "I don't think age is an issue and anyway I still feel 39. Hey, I'm only 39! I wish! No, it's all about the music for me. It's always been about the music not the image for me."
But let's be honest, Eurovision isn't just about the song. Let's talk about really important stuff, you know, the frock?
Bonnie's eyes light up as we start talking dress designs. "My biggest nightmare is the clothes, you now the frock! I'm not going to be half-naked or anything and I'll probably wear something flowing with tight trousers. If I feel comfortable and if I'm happy with my performance on the night, that's good enough for me. I'm not expecting high votes but if I get them, all the better."
And what about the competition? Bonnie's been predicting big things for bookies favourite Denmark, who qualified in last night's semi-final.
She told me "I know I've got a good song but there are younger people with great songs like Denmark and Holland. Germany is catchy although it's like last year's winner and Russia is good.."
And of the current music crop, Bonnie cited "Emeli Sande and Adele" as her particular favourites. " I mean who doesn't like Adele.." Good point.
Bonnie was on great form as we chatted about the process of being selected to represent the UK, the recording of her new album and even joked that she'd welcome a National Bonnie Tyler Day in Wales, if she won.
But the even bigger question for Bonnie; even bigger than winning Eurovision? What about a night out with One Direction's Harry Styles?!
"Why not! Why not, I could take care of him! I'd be his bodyguard…!"
I love her even more more now. More power to you Bonnie Tyler.
The Eurovision Song Contest is Saturday, BBC1 8pm. Bonnie's album "Rocks and Honey" is out now.
