Okay, I admit it. Like the rest of the world, I'd been struck down with a dose of Olympic fever. Random sports, random countries, random national anthems and a ton of Team GB Gold- what an amazing fortnight.
Caught Up In Olympic Madness And A Royal Encounter
Let's be honest, we were all pretty, pretty cynical about London 2012 and I like many was guilty of predicting the worst. But, wow, how wrong we all were. I can't stop watching it! My Olympics began in Hyde Park, where I joined a crowd of thousands to witness Danny Boyle's cinematic and breathtaking Opening Ceremony, in between live music from Snow Patrol, Duran Duran and Stereophonics. Talk about a emotional evening and a truly British affair. I will never forget the collective roar as we watched the formation of the five Olympic rings and the moment I had to convince some stranger, that yes that is the real Queen on screen with Daniel Craig! Cut to a week later, and I found myself at the Olympic Park and settling down to watch the athletics, inside our magnificent Olympic Stadium. And yes, allow me to confirm that the pole vault is genuinely exciting spectacle! I must have clapped and cheered anything and everything that moved and that included the crew that have the job of assembling the hurdles- which is the most precise choreography I've ever witnessed! They need to show this on TV asap. It was like watching ballet- a precise, crisp and fluid Olympic ballet where blokes in blazers excecute the lightest touch to place and position the hurdle as if a medal was in the offing. Genius. Oh and naturally, I also loved witnessing the great Usain Bolt receive his Gold medal and Welshman Dai Greene score a 4th position in the Hurdles final. Overall, my night at the stadium was one I'll never forget (although the food prices are ridiculous but hey..). Oh and naturally my showbiz radar was in working order. I sat a few rows away from Will Young, who bumped into me as he left and told me he wished he was 'out there hurdling instead of watching' and I, for one, believe him. Saluting Team GB all the way and I now can't wait to see the Closing Ceremony. And I'm hearing that a few surprise artists are being brought in for Sunday...
I was actually back in Hyde Park the other night, to watch Joe McElderry perform after Chris Hoy's inspiring and 'totes emosh' Gold medal ceremony. Joe's new material sounded great and his voice was seriously strong. Have to say though, I feel like Hyde Park has become my second home of late after Wireless festvial, Paul Simon, Madonna, the Coca-Cola Torch Relay Concerts, Olympics etc. The wood-chips and I have definitely bonded in the last few weeks! The Torch Relay gig was an amazing day and seriously hot and sunny. Capital was live backstage at the event, all day long and I did my usual thing of running round like a mad man and chatting to the likes of Wretch 32, Mark Ronson, Dizzee, Katy B, Rizzle Kicks and the Wanted lads. I also got to finally hold an Olympic torch, all thanks to talented singer-songwriter Tyler Rix. Now if only I'd managed to blag one of those tasty tracksuits, ahem..!
And keeping with the Olympic theme, I had a great time last week covering the GREAT cocktail reception honouring the best creative talent from Blighty. The Prime Minister hosted the event in London's Picadilly, alongside The Duchess of Cornwall. Now I'm used to red carpets but I have to say that there's very special about covering a Royal red carpet. Basically, protocol dictates that a red carpet must be clear for the arrival of any Royal, who must be the last to arrive. Did Kate come to my mic and give me a world exclusive..? Erm, no, but she did look amazing rocking some silver grey and that 'chignon' hair style. But, I did get to watch a brilliant performance from Tyler James at the after-show party, share cocktails with Faye from Steps and chat to the likes of Roger Daltrey, Lawson, Arlene Philips,Newton Faulkner, Julian Fellowes and the like! Random mix but great fun. Oh and I got to chat to the Culture Secretary which LBC used. Oh yes, I can do a bit of politics now and then!
What else? Well, I had a great weekend back in the homeland, when I worked with Capital South Wales at Ponty's Big Weekend. Now, the event was held very close to where I grew up and the park was the same one that I used to present roadshows at, when I used to present on BBC Radio Wales. So-memories! Olly Murs headlined the event so it was cool to exclusively talk to him backstage. We talked about his new book, new album, Xtra Factor and that clip of falling down the steps. He confessed to me that he almost broke his leg. I also got hang out with the talented Lucie Jones, Cover Drive and various new acts. Oh and it was seriously good to see my old Music Control radio wife Sally Bailey and her long-standing breakfast partner-in-crime, the brilliant Kam Kelly. Proper radio reunion! That same week I was back in Leicester Square on the red carpet at the European premiere of Batman The Dark Knight Rises. Have you seen it yet? Go see...and try and see it in IMAX. The premiere was damp but big, in every sense. Talk about crowds! I managed to interview Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy live on the Capital drive-time show, which went well especially as Tom failed to swear once! Morgan Freeman spoke in THAT voice, the batmobile almost crushed my foot and Oritse from JLS wore that gold tracksuit thang. But hey, it was a Batman premiere! Next week, I'll be on the red carpet at the Total Recall premiere and I'm also interviewing the cast for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Looking forward to seeing it too...
All that plus chatting to Conor Maynard at his UK album launch in London to deafening screams, catching up with Little Mix, hosting my Canadian radio show and getting excited about the tracklisting for the forthcoming Michael Jackson Bad 25 album...and then back to cheering everytimeTeam GB wins a medal, it's a busy Summer so far.
And...I'm back at the Olympic Stadium tonight and listening to the new Rita Ora album on Friday, so will report back asap.
Now, where did I put my trainers...
