Two years on since they were formed on the UK X Factor, One Direction played the biggest gig of their career last night at New York's Madison Square Garden. And I was there to witness it all.
One Direction at Madison Square Garden "This is Bloody Huge!"
Looking truly in awe of the moment, Niall announced to the 15,000 strong audience of loud Directioners "I can't believe I'm about to say this..hello Madison Square Garden!" And looking emotional he added "My Dad always said to me, you know you've made it when you've played Madison Square Garden. This is truly unbelievable."
I've watched a lot of pop concerts over the years but never have I subjected my ears to that intensity of high-pitched screams over a sustained two hour period. From the moment the band took to the stage to deliver 'Up All Night' it was obvious that America wouldn't let this band celebrate in silence. At all.
One Direction's recent album Take Me Home gave the lads their 2nd USA No.1 album in just eight months with world-wide record sales now standing at 15m. Fighting to talk over the deafening screams, Louis declared "We can't believe this is happening tonight. We are so grateful for the opportunity to perform for you, thanks for putting us where are today."
Ed Sheeran was the surprise guest support artists ( "I'm honoured to be able to share this moment with the lads") and after performing a stunning 25 minute set, Ed returned to the stage to perform the brilliant single"Little Things," which Ed composed. An exuberant looking Harry gave his mate a massive man hug and admitted "that was one of the best moments on stage ever!"
The setlist featured tracks from both albums as well as an aptly chosen cover of Wheatus' Teenage Dirtbag. Listening to thousands of pre-teens singing a lot to that one, was slightly surreal I can tell you! The band also answered fan twitter questions ( although this section felt a little long..) which included 'what animal would you be and what would your mating call sound like,' 'who can jump the highest,' and 'do your best impersonation of a New York cab driver." Zayn delivered on that one adding 'what a night..this is the reasons we love coming to America.'
And after Liam thanked his family for travelling to see the show ( in fact all of the 1D families travelled to New York) and Niall declared 'this is the best night of my life' the boys closed their show in true party style, with the now anthemic 'That’s what makes you beautiful' complete with ticker-tape cannons and giant balloons.
And who got the loudest screams? I'd say Niall and Harry share that prize although thousands of Directioners might disagree judging by the response the lads' received, every time they attempted to speak!
The show was the best I've seen from the band and after speaking to various fans outside the venue, I can report that everyone left MSG a rather happy customer.
Big thanks to Clare Newsham/Syco for allowing me to witness the magic and the madness and congratulations to Team 1D.
