A brand new One Direction single is released today (February 17th).
One Direction "We Want Our New Single To Make A Big Difference"
One Way Or Another, a cover of the Blondie classic, is the official Comic Relief Red Nose Day single for 2013, raising money for people living in poverty in both Africa and the UK.
Three weeks ago I was exclusively invited to speak to the lads, at a secret London location, about their involvement with Comic Relief including their recent emotional trip to Ghana where the lads shot a new appeal film.
Niall told me " It was on another level. You literally have no clue, you have to be there to believe it. The shock and sheer poverty of seeing people struggling to get some water, or working 12 hour days, seven days a week for little or no money ; it was such a culture shock. Hopefully as a result of our appeal film, more money can be raised this year."
Harry added "We've all seen appeal films and we thought, okay, that's what it's like but when you're there and you're in it, it's the full sensory experience. Your eyes hurt from the smoke, you get the cough, you're just there feeling it all and it's quiet overwhelming. If you don't cry then you're superhuman.."
Alongside rehearsals for their sold out UK tour and 3D movie commitments, One Direction will also perform One Way or Another at this week's Brit Awards ( Wednesday 20th ) at London's 02, where they're also nominated for Best British Group. So will the band be feeling nervous? Harry admitted "It's going to be a lot of pressure but it's going to be exciting and we're really happy that a single that means this much will be performed on such a big stage." Ay surprise costumes Harry? " I will be wearing the iconic Geri Halliwell dress and platforms, yes..!" Hmm, now that would be something!
A CD Single of One Way or Another, which also mashes up the classic punk song Teenage Kicks, is released in Sainsburys stores on Monday ( Feb 18th). Now the band just want fans to get behind the single.
Niall told me " A number one would be amazing but now we've seen where the money goes, we want everyone to support it. It really will help. The amount of work Comic Relief has already done out there is just amazing but after meeting some of the people can't afford to eat, drink or get to school; this money really make a big difference."
