UK Eurovision Star Molly "There's A Lot Of Credibility In The Competition"

All eyes are on Copenhagen this week, for the 59th Annual Eurovision Song Contest.

The 2014 UK entry Molly Smitten-Downes performed "Children of The Universe" during the second half of Saturday's Grand Final, which was watched by an estimated audience of 300 million TV viewers worldwide. Including Australia. And boy has the UK got a bloomin good song for our Euro neighbours.

Leicestershire born Molly has written one of the UK's best entries for a number of years resulting in the bookies betting predicting a Top 3 placing for the UK. Of course, we last won this beast of a competition back in 1997. Thank you Katrina.

Speaking to me before she flew off to Denmark, the charismatic and talented Molly told me "This is all so unbelievable for me and I really want to to do everyone proud. This all so new to me but yes it would be great to connect with people and so far so good. People seem to be liking the song.."

In the last 7 years, Eurovision has delivered several genuine chart hits with winners Alexander Rybak, Loreen and Danish winner Emmelie de Forrest all denting the Top 20 in the UK. And after performing and writing for ten years, Molly admitted to me that her decision to commit to Eurovision was inspired by their success. "Now I've looked back at the contest, there's a lot of credibility in the competition that doesn't get highlighted enough. I certainly feel the last few years the winners have been fantastic and I'd like to see the competition continue to produce good winners. Denmark was a really cool and credible song.."

And in an age when most young performers opt for an audition on The X Factor, Britain's Got Talent or The Voice, Molly admitted "I never really felt in my heart that The X Factor and The Voice were right way for me to go. I think because my song-writing means so much to me as with those competitions it's more about being a singer and a performer. I don't actually sing other people's songs that well. But with this, with Eurovision, although I wasn't sure at first; after speaking to them I felt this was the right thing to do.."

I'm not out in Denmark but after working at Birmingham 98, Istanbul 2004 and Sweden 2013 I can confidently predict that Molly will be loving the unique world that is the Eurovision bubble. There's a reason it's called the Pop Olympics after all. And after three years of UK jury service, it'll be interesting to see which country secures our all important douze points. My votes would go to Sweden, Netherlands, Malta, Armemia and Spain if anyone cares..

But back to Molly. The 27 year old songwriter describes her song as "a spiritual revolution song" inspired by Max Ehrmann's poem "Words For Life."

So could the UK experience a revolution in the all important voting? Molly seems quietly confident "I think a good song should work without all the frills and all the production, that's how I see it. To everyone back in the UK enjoy the show and let's hope I can do well.."

Power to the People. Even more power to Molly.
